Social Determinants of Mental Health: A Conversation with the Experts

On Tuesday, March 17, 2015 The Morehouse School of Medicine Transdisciplinary Collaborative Center (TCC) for Health Disparities Research presented the second event in the Health Policy to Practice Forum series, The Social Determinants of Mental Health: A Conversation with the Experts. A total of 60 attendees gathered for a dynamic panel discussion and Q&A session with the editors and contributing authors of the recently published textbook, “The Social Determinants of Mental Health.”

  • Introductory remarks were delivered by Dr. David Hefner, Office of the President and Dean at Morehouse School of Medicine. TCC Principal Investigator and 16th Surgeon General of the United States Dr. David Satcher, MD, PhD masterfully framed the issue of the so cial determinants of mental health and stressed to the audience “there is no health without mental health.”
  • Moderator Dr. Kisha Holden, PhD, MSCR (TCC Project PI and Deputy Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute) led a robust discussion with a panel of mental health experts:
    • Michael Compton, MD, MPH, Chairman of Department of Psychiatry, Lenox Hill Hospital; Professor in Department of Psychiatry, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University, New York, NY
    • Ruth Shim, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Education and Faculty Development in Department of Psychiatry, Lenox Hill Hospital; Associate Professor in Department of Psychiatry, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University, New York, NY
    • Brian McGregor, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Morehouse School of Medicine
  • Citing references from the book, the panel critically examined the social, environmental and policy contexts of mental health. Understanding and addressing these contexts are crucial to setting the conditions necessary to reduce mental health disparities and achieve mental wellness f or the entire population.
  • The discussion concluded with closing remarks from Dr. John O. Gaston, MD, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Morehouse School of Medicine.
  • Following the discussion, attendees enjoyed refreshments, a book signing by Drs. Compton and Shim, and visited interactive demos for two emer ging health technologies: What’s My M3?, and Healthify.
